

GREENBURGH (NY), USA - Diana Sainvil, a proud Haitian-American, a Greenburgh native, and Woodlands High School graduate, has been named Miss Black New York USA 2014.Sainvil, now a senior at Georgetown University studying English and Sociology,will participate in the Miss Black USA Pageant against winners from across the nation in August 2014.In Washington DC, service to others has been important to Sainvil since a young age. At Georgetown, she was a mentor and tutor to students at Thurgood Marshall Academy in Anacostia, DC. She volunteered as a third grade teacher assistant at the Center City Public Charter Academy in Shaw, DC. These experiences have helped her realized her passion for serving underrepresented communities.In addition, Sainvil is on her second term as President of Georgetown University Women of Color Organization, which supports and encourages the leadership of women while acknowledging the unique interaction of race and gender. Sainvil was the Head Coach for the Grassroot Project where she help teach 20 at-risk DC children weekly about HIV/AIDS and prevention through games and sports activities. America 2014 Corp member in Baltimore, Maryland. She is passionate about social justice, educational access, and young women’s empowerment and leadership. Serving the community has played an important part in shaping who she is today. After college, will pursue a Masters of Science in Education at John Hopkins University and use her degree to be an advocate for education reform. She believes that every student deserves the opportunity to attain an excellent education.Founded in 1986, the Miss Black USA Pageant aims to “to provide educational opportunities to young women of color and to develop the whole woman-mind, body, and spirit.” Winners receive scholarships, travel and leadership development opportunities.As Miss Black New York, Sainvil’s official platform E.Y.G, “Empowering the Younger Generation”, is a program that addresses the achievement gap in the New York State Public Schools. Through this platform Sainvil want to encourage the younger generation to do their best in anything they put their minds into. Education is the key to success and is a powerful weapon they can use to help change this world. Sainvil grew up in Greenburgh Public Housing for 16 years of her life and was able to overcome socioeconomic barriers by receiving a full-scholarship to Georgetown University. Sainvil did not allow her unstable childhood affect her role in the classroom. She hopes to instill a sense of ambition and drive in students who have come to believe that they are incapable of breaking certain socioeconomic boundaries. Sainvil wants to use her life story to help empower young students to use education as an escape to broaden their horizons.
